Kling and Pastior: Text – Voice – Image
Exhibition
Poetic texts don’t have just meaning, but also their tone, their sound. The tonality of a poem is often marked by the voice and performance of the poet, who with the rendition of her own text sets the parameters, to which other interpretations are related. The exhibition Text – Voice – Image opens up the work of Thomas Kling and Oskar Pastior to an experience of their visual and acoustic aspects.
Thomas Kling was an author, for whom the recitation, the rendition, was a part of the poem itself, and who always considered this. The exhibition shows original handwritten drafts from the poet, as well as transcriptions of the poem-complex “Manhattan Mundraum” (Manhattan Mouthspace), which in their arrangement resembles musical scores, and invites individual interpretations. Oskar Pastior’s work and its interperative possibilities are illustrated in the project “TINO: Sentence-Drawings (SatzZeichnungen)”. Over 40 artists as well as 150 children and young people have illustrated the sentence “Tino is in the garden and sees an orange” from Pastior’s poem “Die Tafelmusik” (Table Music). As such they make their understanding of the line illustrative. Included are drawings by Friedrich Achleitner, Zsuzsanna Gahse, Ilse and Pierre Garnier, Ingomar von Kiesritzky, Friederike Mayröcker, Gerhard Rühm and more.
The public is invited to listen to various interpretations of poems by both authors, spoken by the two authors, as well as by the winners of a competition callout for recitations, and also to try their own hand at rendering the poems.
